Career highlights include:- Collaborating with local indigenous communities to uncover a previously undocumented population of West African chimpanzee in Sierra Leone.- PhD on black rhino, in particular working with WWF's Black Rhino Range Expansion Project.- Leading co-author on Beavers in Scotland, which led to the formal protection and reintroduction of beavers in Scotland.- Leading the first pine marten reintroduction to England.- Leading the creation of the first plan for biodiversity restoration across the nation's forests managed by Forestry England, the largest land manager in England.- Contributing to national policy on nature recovery through key forums, such as the England Species Reintroduction Taskforce.- Spearheading the collection of one of the largest soil eDNA datasets in England and translating this data-rich source into practical applications for nature restoration.I am passionate about ensuring that scientific research is effectively applied to nature restoration practice. I am committed to advancing the professionalism and effectiveness of the nature restoration sector through evidence-based approaches and cross-sector collaboration.

Head Of Environment And Nature RecoveryForestry England Mar 2023 - PresentUnited KingdomI am the strategic lead for nature recovery at Forestry England. We are the largest land manager in England, covering an array of different habitats, from upland Sitka spruce plantations, to the diverse mosaic of the New Forest.I lead on the development and delivery of our Biodiversity Plan. Focusing on achieving favourable status on our 68,000 ha of SSSIs, increasing the area of open habitat to 21.1%, restoring our 42,000 ha of PAWS, delivering more and better species reintroductions, and driving innovation within our wild areas such as Wild Ennerdale. I am particularly interested in cost-effective nature recovery at scale, coupled with robust metrics of biodiversity performance such as eDNA and bioacoustics.I represent Forestry England on the National Nature Reserve steering group and Major Landowners Group, and am a member of the England Species Reintroductions Taskforce.I also lead our wider environment team, covering wildlife management, the historic environment, and the Forest Wilding programme, and assist with organisational wide initiatives such as TNFD adoption.I was a winner of a Forestry England People Award, under the category "Be Adventurous", one of Forestry England's four values. -

Conservation Projects ManagerGloucestershire Wildlife Trust Jun 2016 - Feb 2019ColefordI was project manager on a variety of conservation projects in Gloucestershire. My primary focus was on assessing the feasibility of reintroducing pine martens (Martes martes) to the Forest of Dean. This project utilised IUCN international and national guidelines (Scottish Code for Conservation Translocations) to fully assess the biological, ecological, and socio-economic costs and benefits of a pine marten reintroduction to the Forest of Dean, UK. It was a collaboration between Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust, Vincent Wildlife Trust, and the Forestry Commission, and was followed by a full reintroduction project. I was winner of The Wildlife Trust's Marsh Award for Leadership and Innovation in Nature Restoration. -
Species Conservation Translocations ProjectScottish Natural Heritage Jul 2014 - Jul 2015Inverness, United KingdomI worked on a number of projects and issues surrounding species translocations. I was the lead author on a number of chapters within the SNH ‘Beavers in Scotland’ report. A key chapter involved outlining the future scenarios for beavers (Castor fiber) in Scotland, and discussing the pros and cons of each. I was also the lead author on a review of potential beaver interactions with biodiversity in Scotland, and a GIS analysis of potential beaver habitat in Scotland, both published as commissioned reports. In addition to this work, I supported the National Species Reintroduction Forum, in particular helping to test the recently published Scottish Code for Conservation Translocations. Through liaising with a variety of conservation and land-use bodies I set up groups that tested the Code using a variety of species including lynx. During my year at SNH I had two performance reviews, both times being rated ‘Exceptional’.http://www.snh.gov.uk/protecting-scotlands-nature/reintroducing-native-species/ -
