Profile bio

About Cameron Pascoe

With over 8+ years in diverse chemistry laboratories, I have expertise and skill in organic synthesis, medicinal chemistry, biocatalysis, small molecule synthesis, materials chemistry, polymer chemistry and analytical chemistry. I have worked on numerous collaborative projects and self driven projects, leading them to publication.I researched biocatalysis as a PostDoc with Dr. Kyle Biegasiewicz (now at Emory University) at Arizona State University, focusing on leveraging robust Vanadium Haloperoxidases (VHPOs) to access a wide range of small molecules. My work was aimed at addressing the limitations and hazards associated with traditional chemical syntheses. I employed these VHPOs to conduct many chemical transformations, including catalyzing semi-pinacol rearrangements (~90% yield) and cyclizations of thioallylamides (30 substrates, ~85% Yield). Most recently, I studied a route to biocatalytic heterocycle synthesis enabled by enzymatic halide recycling, allowing gram-scale biocatalytic access to the natural product Penicilliumthiamine B through the use of VHPOs.I also conducted a PostDoc with Dr. Timothy Long's Lab at ASU, focusing on sustainable polymer synthesis and design. My primary project involved developing novel spiropyran hydrogels for the photo-reversible capture of copper cations in water for industrial water remediation. I synthesized the monomers on a moderate scale (100g) and worked to tailor the hydrogels' affinity for various other metal cations by synthesizing novel spiropyran monomers derivatives. Additionally, I am worked on making these membranes depolymerizable to enable convenient chemical recycling. I was also involved in surface functionalization of polyurethane foams, creating an alternate route for mattress recycling and facilitating their use in oil spill remediation efforts.During my Ph.D. with Dr. John C. Vederas at the University of Alberta, I focused on peptide and peptidomimetic research. I synthesized a wide variety of cardioprotective and anti-metastatic peptide analogues, working on synthesis scales ranging from 10mg of diterpene natural product to 50g of starting materials. I embarked on numerous long linear, stereospecific syntheses to access non-canonical amino acids for peptide incorporation. Throughout my Ph.D., I collaborated with various internal and external research groups, leading to multiple publications. Additionally, I served as a teaching assistant for 2nd and 3rd-year organic chemistry labs, and received recognition for my teaching abilities through nominations for awards and scholarships.
