Daniel Carpenter is Allie S. Freed Professor of Government and Director of Social Sciences at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Studies at Harvard University. He is author of Reputation and Power: Organizational Image and Pharmaceutical Regulation at the FDA (Princeton University Press, 2010) – winner of the 2011 Allan Sharlin Memorial Award of the Social Science History Association – and The Forging of Bureaucratic Autonomy: Networks, Reputations and Policy Innovation in Executive Agencies, 1862-1928 (Princeton University Press, 2001). With David Moss, he is the author and editor of Preventing Regulatory Capture (Cambridge University Press, 2013). Professor Carpenter is a Guggenheim Fellow, a former fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study and the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford, and an elected Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration. He has recently served on the National Academy of Medicine’s Committee on Scientific Standards for Modified Risk Tobacco Products and the NAM’s Committee on Counterfeit, Falsified and Substandard Drug Products. He also serves on the NBER’s Consumer Finance Working Group.He has held grants from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Council on Library and Information Resources Mellon Foundation), the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the Alfred Sloan Foundation. He received his A.B. from Georgetown University and his Ph.D. in political science from the University of Chicago. A native of northern Michigan, he lives with his family in Belmont, Massachusetts.
