I am a fifty-four year old retired Marine Corps officer and a docent at the National Museum of the Marine Corps. After graduating college in 1984, I was commissioned and served twenty years as a tank officer and security management officer. I retired in 2005 and since then I have continued to work for the Marine Corps as the Service and Multi-Service Doctrine Coordinator for the Marine Corps. My responsibilities include overseeing the teams that write over 300 publications for use by Marines all over the world. I also train Marines and civilians on the Marine Corps doctrine process and how to write effective doctrine. When I was retiring from the Marine Corps, the National Museum of the Marine Corps (NMMC) was under construction and I immediately signed up to undergo the very first docent training program. I have been a docent at the museum since it opened in 2006 and to date I have over 4,760 hours of volunteer service. I have become a trusted seasoned docent but I have also assisted the museum staff with other aspects of museum planning, restoration, operations and exhibits. In addition to my docent responsibilities, I have researched and designed many of the gallery guides for new docents and I help train and mentor each new class of docents. I have presented numerous historical presentations on military studies represented in the museum. I am also a nationally recognized and award winning miniaturist and diorama artist, and I have put these talents to work helping to restore or construct models and exhibits used throughout the museum. I was also part of the Blue Skies Board that helped determine the stories and exhibits that will be included in the expansion of the NMMC. I have just started a master of museum studies program offered by Johns Hopkins University. After completion I am looking forward to transitioning over to a museum profession full time. I can’t wait to have more museum adventures and help shape their future.
