I focused on strategy around editorial, advertising and fundraising, and I worked with data analysts and product leaders as we looked to make Mahoning Matters, which was launched as part of the Compass Experiment with Google, a sustainable business model.

I ran a team of four reporters who covered Transportation and Infrastructure for POLITICO Pro.

I directed reporters who did stories for the front page and Metro – tackling topics from the Census to transportation/growth issues to the Super Bowl to award-winning coverage of social services and the homeless in Dallas. I also led the newsroom in Collin County and coordinated Local News enterprise coverage for the Sunday newspaper during this period. My.

I directed the 17-member General Assignments Department for Local News — a collection of senior editors, senior reporters and columnists.

I was tapped to plan, organize and edit our showcase newspaper of the week. I worked with editors and reporters from Sports, Business, Arts and Local News.

I handled enterprise and projects in the Metro department, working with reporters and editors downtown and in our bureaus to map out daily and weekend plans and special coverage, including multiple elections and the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. I also supervised specialty reporters.

I supervised about 40 editors and reporters in 12 bureaus across the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Coverage included government, schools, criminal justice and general assignments. I also managed financial budgets and handled personnel and staffing decisions.

I ran the Metro department at night, choosing daily lineups, orchestrating production of the next day’s report, and managing a team of editors and reporters. This was life in the hot seat, calling the shots on multiple breaking news stories as they developed, including during 9/11 and the capture of the Texas Seven.
