About Robert Hartman

I've developed a broad and deep set of engineering skills from over 35 years of experience in creating software solutions for organizations ranging from startups to Fortune 500 and at scales from devices to enterprise cloud computing. In a diverse set of fields ranging from medical technology to digital entertainment I've applied leading edge technologies to create innovative solutions recognized with awards including multiple Emmy nominations, a Harvard/Ford Foundation Innovation Award, and five US patent filings. I work with multiple languages, frameworks, and platforms, and I enjoy the challenge of creatively applying leading edge technologies to deliver meaningful solutions to real problems. In addition to developing purpose-built solutions, I also have quite a bit of experience in developing frameworks, services, APIs, and platforms that enable engineering teams to push to new levels of productivity. It takes more than just technology implementation for a business or project to succeed. So, in addition to hands-on technical skills, I provide leadership through my ability to communicate complex technical concepts to audiences at all levels of an organization, provide coaching and mentoring, align business and technology strategies, and monitor industry trends to identify and successfully incorporate relevant emerging technologies.Ultimately, it is people working together that make things happen, so reach out to me if you want to talk tech, have similar interests, or just want to explore ideas.I'm not bound to any specific technologies, and I've worked with way too many to list them all here, but here's a sampling: OS: Linux, UNIX, Windows, Windows Embedded, AndroidLanguages: C#/.NET, Go, C/C++, Java, Python, JavaScript, SQL, AssemblyInfra: AWS, Azure, Kubernetes, OCI/Docker, Prometheus, RabbitMQ, Git, TeamCity, Octopus, ArgoCD, Consul, Terraform, Packer, GrafanaDB: Aurora, MySQL, SQL Server, Oracle/PL-SQL, SQLite, MongoDB, Graphite

Robert Hartman Work Experience Details
  • Servicenow
    Principal Engineer - Cloud Computing
    Servicenow Apr 2021 - Present
    Santa Clara, Ca, Us
Currently working in the delivery of next-generation extensions to the ServiceNow cloud platform, focusing on development of a Kubernetes-native platform enabling the definition of high volume data stream processing pipelines by platform developers. Previous work in this role included development of Azure-based cloud services for IoT integration with ServiceNow's flagship product. All work in this role, past and present, emphasizes high-availability and resiliency balanced with cost optimization across a range of in-house and hosted cloud services. Recent hands-on engineering work includes Kubernetes operators, observability stack, CLI developer tooling, and GitOps CI/CD.
  • Cisco
    Principal Architect
    Cisco Aug 2015 - Apr 2021
    San Jose, Ca, Us
As the Technical Principal of Cisco's San Diego site, my role involved a balance of hands-on engineering of platform software and virtual infrastructure, consultation across multiple engineering teams to help them solve their most challenging technical problems, and advocating for cloud native development in the larger Cisco organization. I led the development of a cloud native application development platform on which multiple engineering teams build and deploy microservices and applications composed of those microservices. This included designing and building platform features supporting service identity, messaging, service-to-service invocation, and health monitoring, as well as APIs and frameworks for microservices to interact with those features. I was also responsible for the design and buildout in AWS of the managed infrastructure backing these features, such as service registries, message brokers, and observability systems. I also led the evolution of the platform from a Windows/EC2 Instances/AMI/CIOps model to a Linux/Kubernetes/Docker/GitOps model with full interoperability between microservices running in either model to enable gradual transitioning.
  • Maintenancenet (Acquired By Cisco)
    Chief Software Engineer
Maintenancenet (Acquired By Cisco) Nov 2013 - Aug 2015
I joined MaintenanceNet to lead a successful pivot of the startup's technology platform from an on-premise monolithic multi-tier web application to a cloud-based event-driven microservices architecture with scalability, adaptability, and high-availability as key features. This effort required close collaboration with founders and business leaders to envision a technology strategy that aligned with the business strategy. Leading the implementation included extensive hands-on development of software frameworks for developers, build-out of key elements of a distributed microservices architecture (service registration/discovery, messaging system, observability platform, etc.), and creation of underlying cloud infrastructure based in Amazon Web Services (AWS).MaintenanceNet was acquired by Cisco in 2015.
  • Covidien
    Principal Engineer
    Covidien Dec 2009 - Nov 2013
As a member of Research & Development, Respiratory Solutions Division, I led the development of software to enable clinicians to provide high quality care to patients. A high point of my work at Covidien was envisioning and developing the first iteration of a health informatics system to gather information from patient-connected medical devices and present it in a mobile application for remote monitoring by clinicians. From a technical perspective, the application included the development of software services to integrate with hardware, RESTful APIs into live feeds from the services, and a native Android tablet-based mobile application written in Java. The business outcome of this effort was significant. After gaining visibility with C-level executives it was a direct influence on their decision to approve the creation of an internal start-up (to my knowledge, a first-ever event in this $40 billion company) to produce the company's first health informatics product. In addition to spawning a start-up and new product-line, it led to several patent applications, recognition as a Corporate Strategic Inventor, and the presentation of an Early Stage Innovation Award.I also led the introduction of agile processes into the company. This included incorporating agile scrum practices into projects that I participated in, as well as providing training to other parts of the company in agile principles and practices.
  • Irdeto
    Principal Engineer / Technical Architect
    Irdeto Sep 2007 - Dec 2009
    Hoofddorp, Noord-Holland, Nl
At Irdeto I was a Principal Engineer in a 60-member engineering team responsible for the development of one of the company's flagship products: a subscription management platform providing billing and subscriber management services to major broadcast providers such as DirectTV. The system was designed with a service-oriented architecture (SOA) and developed primarily in .NET WCF, with data stored in Oracle. The capabilities of the system ranged from subscriber management to payment processing and conditional access (CA) to content. I served as the technical leader of a team whose achievements included the development of a pre-paid billing engine that was pivotal to enabling the company’s entry into South American and Asian markets where small cash payments were the primary means of subscription payment. A major challenge included achieving design compatibility with an existing post-paid domain model. Technologies included C#/.NET web services (WCF), background services (Windows Services), stored procedures (Oracle PL/SQL), and TDD with FIT/Fitter.In addition I served as a member of 5-person Architectural Review Board responsible for identification, review, and oversight of architectural changes, major development initiatives, and technical aspects of product releases.
  • Calamp / Vytek / Stellcom
    Principal Engineer / Software Architect
    Calamp / Vytek / Stellcom Sep 2000 - Sep 2007
    Irvine, Ca, Us
At Stellcom I was proud to be part of a company known in the Southern California region as having an ability to solve the toughest technical problems. As an engineering consulting firm, Stellcom provided engineers and project management to a wide variety of companies, including extensive engagements with Microsoft as a Gold Partner. While at Stellcom, my team developed a video on demand (VOD) offering for Movielink (a consortium of 5 major Hollywood movie studios (Paramount, Sony, MGM, Universal, and Warner Bros.) to provide consumer download of feature-length movie content. Think "Netflix before Netflix". A successful delivery on this project, and other similar efforts, led to the creation of a digital media practice in Stellcom with me as the technical principal.During my time in the digital media practice at Stellcom (and later Vytek and CalAmp via acquisition) we successfully delivered multiple pioneering products in the entertainment industry. These included: a set-top appliance and end-to-end content delivery platform for Microsoft (C++, C#, XML/XSLT, XP Embedded, Commerce Server, SQL Server, WM DRM), Portable Media Center integration for Starz Entertainment (C++, Qt, joint-development with Microsoft engineering teams), a "Digital Living Room Showcase" for Intel & Morgan Freeman demonstrating advanced digital rights management, and security analysis for Turner Broadcasting. Recognition of our achievements in the digital media practice included two Emmy nominations in the category of Science, Engineering and Technology.
  • Sddpc
    Senior Software Engineer
    Sddpc Jun 1990 - Sep 2000
    San Diego, Ca, Us
At SDDPC I was engaged in ground-breaking work developing one of the nations first regional geographic information systems (GIS). RUIS (Regional Urban Information System) provided hundreds of layers of digital geographic information to dozens of municipal agencies in the San Diego region. To this day, it is considered one of the most successful multi-agency information systems ever attempted, receiving the Exemplary Government Systems award from URISA.While at SDDPC I was the lead GIS developer on an integrated, end-to-end work order management system for the City of San Diego Water Utilities Department. The success of the system was recognized with an innovation award from Harvard University and the Ford Foundation. The success of our efforts with regional utilities led to the formation of a new division within SDDPC to offer consulting services to utilities outside the region, with engagements including cities in Arizona and Texas, as well as private companies such as SDG&E/Sempra Energy where I developed a first-ever integration of document management and GIS technologies deployed on their corporate intranet.
  • County Of Orange
    Software Engineer
County Of Orange Jan 1985 - Jun 1990
    Us
At the County of Orange I provided system administration for a large DECnet/VAX network serving the County Administrative Office and Board of Supervisors. I also developed GIS solutions for multiple county departments. During this time, due to ESRI beta testing some of their very first products (PIOS and ArcInfo) at our site, I developed relationships with some of the pioneering figures in the geographic information systems (GIS) industry. This led me to become deeply involved in the GIS industry during its earliest years, including software development, conference presentations, and authoring.
