About James Morley

Current Programmes and Housing Assistant for the Isaac Newton Institute (2024-2025). First-class graduate in BA and MPhil (by Thesis) Linguistics from Queens' College, University of Cambridge. My primary research interests are in theoretical syntax and language typology; in particular, in the syntactic machinery involved in agreement - viewed through the prism of person-animacy restrictions - and the locality constraints which operate on it. My BA thesis provides the first formal description of 'inertness' effects in person-animacy restrictions and their implications for theories of these restrictions, and Agree more generally. My MPhil thesis is a generative typological study of left-branch extraction in 35 languages, which argued for the novel empirical 'Mixed LBE Generalisation', that LBE-permitting dependencies always show a mix of A/A'-movement properties. This led to proposals for amending standard thinking about Agree and the locality constraints on it.

Programmes And Housing Assistant

Current

Assistant to the Housing and Events teams helping to deliver research programmes at the Isaac Newton Institute of Mathematical Sciences, under the University of Cambridge. This is a 9-month fixed contract. I am responsible for managing large databases of information about visitors to the Institute, acting as a liaison between visitors and members of the Housing and Events teams, and providing ad hoc administrative support with a range of processes involved in the preparation of the Institute's research programmes.

Aug 2024 - Present

Volunteer Research Assistant

I collaborated with Professor Bert Vaux on a project investigating the conditions on flapping in American English phonology, resulting in an co-authored manuscript.

Jun 2023 - Aug 2023

Associate Editor

In my second year on JoULAB's Editorial Committee, this time as JoULAB's Associate Editor for academic affairs, I was primarily responsible for liaising with authors regarding their submissions and providing updates as and when we get them from our reviewers; and also in charge of managing submissions as they come in, anonymising them and ultimately preparing them to be distributed to our reviewers by the Head of the Board of Reviewers, to whom I report. I'll also be contributing to the overhaul of our correspondence, and to creating a new guide for prospective authors in the coming months.

May 2022 - May 2023

Secretary

As the Secretary of the Journal of the Undergraduate Linguistics Association of Britain (JoULAB), I serve on JoULAB's Editorial Committee, with responsibility for overseeing JoULAB's publicity; this includes our social media correspondence, and day-to-day correspondence with authors and reviewers. I have also helped with administrative tasks, such as taking meeting minutes, contributing to the publication of the organisation's first issue at the end of May 2021.

May 2021 - May 2022

Research Intern

In the summer after my second year, I provided research assistance to Professor Ioanna Sitaridou in a research project she is conducting jointly with Dr. Nicolaos Neocleous on the subject of ‘Word order and information structure in Romeyka’. The project is partly (micro-)comparative, relating Romeyka’s information structure to those of its cognate variety, Pontic Greek, and Turkish, to shed light on potential contact effects. Having first conducted independent research to familiarise myself with the relevant literature, I had responsibility for restructuring and rewriting large sections of the paper to ensure conciseness and cogency; I also helped research heuristics for underlying word order, to feature in the paper.

Jun 2022 - Jul 2022

Institutional Representative For The University Of Cambridge

As an Institutional Representative at the Undergraduate Linguistics Association of Britain (ULAB), I am responsible for two-way communication: on the one hand, communicating the desires, concerns and queries of my peers at my institution to the ULAB team, helping to better tailor ULAB's services to the needs of undergraduates in linguistics; and on the other hand, communicating news, events and opportunities offered by ULAB to the student-body. This takes place across a range of channels: in-person events organised by myself, email, and social media.

Apr 2021 - Apr 2022

Eastern Generative Grammar Summer School 2021

Eastern Generative Grammar

Online

I participated in two online courses at the Eastern Generative Grammar (EGG) Summer School over two weeks in the summer of 2021. The first, 'Person restrictions in syntax: A generative typological approach' taught by Professor Adrian Stegovec, taught me both about the specifics of person restrictions in a cross-linguistic perspective and the ways of capturing relevant typological generalisations with a Minimalist apparatus, as well as the broader challenges and rewards of typological research within the generative framework. The second, 'Upward vs. Downward Agreement' by Dr Anke Himmelreich, provided an overview of contemporary approaches to the operation Agree, as well as a broad empirical overview of agreement phenomena that pose problems for syntactic theory.
