She knew knowledge meant understanding, and she never wanted to underestimate her children's ability to understand the why behind her words. Years later, she told me she had come to regret that promise—because with me, the question "why" had no end. Something I've learned since then is that "why" does eventually have an end, that is, when you ask the right questions. But finding that end often means you have to accept that the answer isn't always out there. Sometimes, you get to solve it yourself.
