About Scott Simpkins
Analytical in nature, my scientific journey has taken me from liquid chromatography and LC-MS method development, to computational biology and the analysis of high-throughput chemical screens against yeast mutants, and now to predicting and validating synthetic lethal genetic interactions in cancer. I am particularly interested in understanding how genes work together within networks to perform their functions, and how disruptions in the genetic code propagate through these networks resulting in phenotypes such as disease and toxicity.Throughout my work I have successfully integrated diverse areas of expertise to solve problems, including data mining, machine learning, statistics, and bio- and cheminformatics. I am motivated, resourceful, and independent, a quick learner, and absolutely a team player. I take great pride in the computational support I have provided to collaborators in the biology and chemistry fields, and I firmly believe in the power of interactive data visualization tools that enable wet lab scientists to deeply interrogate the high-throughput data they generate.

I developed a software pipeline to predict synthetic lethal interactions from genome-wide CRISPR knockout screens conducted across hundreds of cancer cell lines. The goal of this work was to nominate and validate synergistic combination drug therapies for the treatment of cancer, using gene knockouts as a proxy for drug treatment.
