Touchstone was a VOIP provider which was a startup with the former CEO of Ionex. As a small group of 4 we began the business in hotel rooms. Like most startups this was an all hands on deck environment. In the role as Dir. of Reg Affairs I monitored and commented on proposed legislation relating to VOIP and the issues of the time such as E911 calls yet I also took on roles in sales, contract management and general office management. As is typified by startups this was an exciting atmosphere.

Began work in this startup CLEC as Director of Business Integration. After 6 months in that role was tapped for the IT Director role. In this position I lacked a great deal of technical knowledge for IT but found that what was necessary was not technical expertise but leadership. This was a tremendous opportunity to expand my understanding and challenge my capabilities as a leader. The team was very successful in exceeding the needs and requirements of the business in Help Desk Support, Hardware and Software Management, Network Management and Network Security. This was a rare and important chance to step away from my comfort zone and into a role which the team could succeed if only they could be lead well.

Earned fast track promotion to manage remote teams for a provider of telecommunications and networking hardware and software. Responsibilities included creating support for programs focusing on environmental concerns to eliminate CFC’s from manufacturing processes. Implemented Environmental Management Systems consistent with ISO 14001 registry requirements and conceived and initiated the Energy Management System targeting supply and demand side energy use. Identified key market indicators for corporate strategic planning. Defined environmental due diligence for mergers and acquisitions and served as liaison with Legal and Finance.

Environmental Manager

This was an exciting time when Texas Governor Richards had created an industry/agency collaborative group to write the Texas rules for Industrial Hazardous and Solid Waste Management. This group did more to write good science based rules management. It was one of the few truly collaborative efforts to write rules I have been part of. Also, during this period I invented a solution for lead contaminated blasting media and wrote the first System wide manual illustrating and explaining a pre-ISO 14001 management system process for compliance with RCRA and DOT for each solid waste generated in the TU Electric system. In addition I provide compliance assistance and audit support to 26 power plant facilities including the Comanche Peak nuclear facility. Also during this period I was able to complete our first Bio-remediation of a #2 fuel oil spill resulting in 0.5M savings for the cleanup.
