Initiative of Trans with a Mission-Uganda (ITWAM) is an autonomous indigenous non-hierarchical rural trans feminist youth led non-profit organization that was formed in 2019 to work primarily in the areas of policy change advocacy, media activism and rural trans and gender diverse persons’ sexual health and human rights advocacy in Eastern Uganda with the aim of advancing the equity, equality and quality of the lives and wellbeing of trans and gender diverse persons including those living with disabilities, HIV and trans sex workers in Eastern Uganda and Uganda as whole.
Among other trans and gender diverse related issues, ITWAM focuses on structural and institutionalised violence, discrimination in employment, access to essential social services, hate crimes and direct violence, federal research surveys, affordable and quality healthcare access and collecting data of rural trans and gender diverse people in the region to improve national organizing and programming.
Our mission is to strengthen all rights of rural trans and gender diverse persons including those living with disabilities by representing our diverse needs within human rights strategies in Eastern Uganda to meet the needs of our local community.
